Breakthrough sponsors junior baseball in North Queensland

The Breakthrough Group has undertaken the sponsorship of a fulltime junior baseball consultant with the goal of getting kids off the street and on to the training ground.

North Queensland Baseball Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Johnson (KJ) as NQ's new Baseball Development Officer. Kevin has been involved in baseball development for approx. 20 years and comes to NQ from the Northern Territory where he has worked as a Development Officer for NT Baseball for the past couple of years. He will be working in both Cairns and Townsville with schools and clubs to increase participation in the sport and promote it as a safe exciting physical activity for junior players.

The aim of this development officer position is to increase baseball’s profile in the general community and liaise with schools to develop school baseball programs and  inter-school competitions. He will be aiming to increase club participation particularly at Junior level starting with Aussie T-ball.

The position, sanctioned and to be directed by Baseball Queensland, was initiated by Cairns businessman and avid baseball fan, Ric Doo, who approached BQI to find someone to help develop baseball in NQ.  Ric and Roz Doo through their company Breakthrough (NQ) Pty Ltdare generously funding the position driven by their desire to see the sport grow into a major force in the north.

Kevin will kick-off the project this week working alongside Development Officers from Baseball Queensland. They will be visiting schools in Cairns before assisting with a ‘Come & Try Day’ on Saturday, February 15 from 9.00am to 1.00pm at Balaclava State School. The team will move to Townsville next week to repeat the program with Townsville schools and clubs with a Come and Try Day at on Saturday February 22 from 9.00am to 12.00pm at Jabiru Park.
